In our Grade 1 modern classes, children of around 7 to 9 years learn basic modern dance technique as well as improving strength, flexibility and stamina. Artistic quality and musical awareness are also developed, focusing on contrasts in music and style.
At this level it is compulsory to learn Primary or Grade 1 tap alongside modern in order to develop rhythm and timing.
Boys who attend weekday Grade 1 modern classes, also attend our Boys Street (I) classes and this is an optional additional class for Saturday Boys.
Children work towards their ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) Grade 1 modern examinations. In addition, we are sometimes able to offer our modern students the opportunity to take a freestyle modern dance examination.
After taking their Grade 1 modern examination, children move into Grade 2 modern. At this time, girls start Also see Commercial / Street dancing classes and boys move up into Boys Street (II).
