Our Primary tap classes are for children in school years 2 to 4. In these classes, children develop correct stance, musical timing, the ability to dance a given number of steps in a sequence, clear & rhythmical beating and coordination. Developing a confident eye line and sense of performance is also a strong focus at this level. This secure foundation in tap dancing and development of a confident performance is crucial if children wish to progress to higher tap levels and also prepares children to prepare to enter the Primary tap examination should they wish.
Primary tap is the first tap examination which is offered by the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) and so the syllabus work is covered comprehensively in these lessons. The syllabus exercises are up-to-date and energetic so children tend to really enjoy working on them.
Primary tap is a class examination which means the teacher accompanies a small group of children into the examination for support and reassurance, but is not permitted to join in or lead the children in any way. The children must have a complete knowledge of the steps and exercises, and be able to recall them from memory. We understand that this might be your child’s first ever experience of an examination and so we ensure children are fully prepared and confident to enter, meaning it’s a very positive event.
Modern (and also usually ballet) must be learned alongside Primary to help with strength, placement and understanding of line.
