Modern & Street and Jazz Dancing
Age range: 6 to 15 years
Through our modern classes, students learn and experience a wide range of exciting dance styles including contemporary, lyrical, blues, jazz and isolations.
Modern & Street and Jazz Dancing classes are based on correct technique, rather than freestyle dance. For this reason, we ask that students who study modern in ISTD* Grade 3 and higher and wish to take modern examinations, also study ballet. Likewise, for students who study modern in ISTD* Grade 5 and higher, we ask that they also study body conditioning. Children in Primary and Grade 1 Modern, must also study tap to help develop their rhythm.
Girls and boys have slightly different options with Modern & Street/Jazz Dancing in the early years:
Girls
Girls age 6-7 years can learn Primary Modern with Pre-Primary Tap. The two genres are compulsory together, and the linked classes can be taken in block times, one after the other. We recommend that girls also learn Pre-Primary Ballet at this level. Please note: we do not offer Street Dance classes for girls at this level.
Girls age 7-9 years can learn Grade 1 Modern with Primary Tap.
Boys
Boys can join with girls in the classes mentioned above, and they also have some some extra choices in the Modern and Street genres, including Junior Funky Moves – see Boys Only Classes.
Modern & Street / Jazz Dancing – Advanced Classes
Advanced classes for older children and adults are mixed:
